ALLEGRO
Life as a Thornthwaite, people flee, they run and hide
You too – if you’re not careful we’ll take you oh woah to the other side
CHORUS
Woah, to the other side
ALLEGRO
I killed my brothers and my wife, left none alive
They were in my way, I sent them woah to the other side
CHORUS
Woah to the other side
Just feel your blood freeze in your veins
ALLEGRO
It is too late now
CHORUS
You’re in our domain
ALLEGRO: My son Milton was the only family member I allowed to live. From then on only one child, a son, was born into each Thornthwaite generation. Only one can inherit. My son made me proud when he shot me dead and took over the manor by force.
MILTON
Life a Thornthwaite, my whole life was wrought with death
Of course my son took my final breath
Sent me woah to the other side
CHORUS
Woah to the other side
MILTON
Life as a Thornthwaite, you’re haunted by the dead
ALLEGRO, MILTON, CHORUS
We watch while you sleep in bed
Right here from the other side
Woah to the other side
MILTON: I followed in my father’s footsteps, making life difficult for all those who lived and worked in the local village, Little Fledgling. When my son Elroy was born I exiled my wife far away to prevent further offspring.
ELROY
Life as a Thornthwaite, means you’re always on the top
You must keep power, keep control, and you must never stop
ROYSTON
Life as a Thornthwaite I was never denied
It was many years til I went
CHORUS
Woah to the other side
ELROY: Yes, I hung my father from the staircase as a warning to all that no one stands between a Thornthwaite and his inheritance. It wasn’t long, however, until my son Royston took my place.
ROYSTON: When I was ten years old I stabbed my father to death and had my mother thrown into the sea. At such a young age I already knew the importance of living up to the Thornthwaite legacy. Unfortunately, I died at a ripe old age, because my foolish son Orinoco refused to kill, not even his own wife Eliza.
ELIZA
Life as a Thornthwaite, my husband never tried
He was kind until he was taken woah to the other side
CHORUS
Woah to the other side
ELIZA: Orinoco was a gentle and loving man, unlike other Thornthwaites.
ORINOCO: Molasses is best served warm!
ELIZA: We tried to repair relations with the people in the village. Unfortunately, our son Silas was like his ancestors before him. His failed attempt to murder Orinoco turned my husband quite mad.
ORINOCO: I’m a flowerpot!
ELIZA: A week later he crushed us both with a chandelier.
SILAS
I was superior to that man in every way
I enjoyed sending him away
CHORUS
Woah to the other side
SILAS: My father brought shame on our family name, and I spent my life restoring it to its rightful place. My useless wife Agnes took years to give birth to our son Mycroft, and then he turned out to be just as soft as my father.
AGNES: I raised our son to be kind and caring, despite the abuse we both received from Silas. It was only bad luck that Silas and I were killed in a car accident.
MYCROFT: I, like my grandfather, was different to my relatives. My wife Martha and I vowed that when I inherited the manor we would change things for the better.
MARTHA: Unfortunately, before we could do anything we both died suddenly, shortly after the birth of our twins.
ELIZA, AGNES, MYCROFT, MARTHA: We learnt the hard way that you mustn’t get in a Thornthwaite’s way. For them it’s kill or be killed.
ALLEGRO, MILTON, ELROY, ROYSTON, SILAS
Come and sit yourself down, enjoy the show
Get ready to relearn all the things you know
Life’s too short to waste time, soon you’ll join us on the other side
ALLEGRO
The other side
ALLEGRO, MILTON, ELROY, ROYSTON, SILAS,CHORUS
Life as a Thornthwaite
People flee, they run and hide
Life as a Thornthwaite
Leave, run and hide
ALLEGRO, MILTON, ELROY, ROYSTON, SILAS
If you’re not careful we will take you
ALL
Woah to the other side
Just feel your breath catch in your lungs
A strange new tale will soon be sung
ALLEGRO: Mycroft and his wife were the first to bring twins into the family. First born was Ovid, a shining example of a true Thornthwaite. But then came his sister Lorelli, the first girl to be born into the family. It didn’t take long for them to turn to the old family ways – to murder. They started trying to kill each other at such a young age that neither remembers who struck first.
MYCROFT: Ovid says that Lorelli started the attacks when she put on a play about the French Revolution, staring him as Louis XVI.
MARTHA: Lorelli claims that Ovid began it all when in the heat of summer he gave her an ice lolly rigged with an explosive device.
ALLEGRO: Nothing held them back from fulfilling their destinies as true Thornthwaites. They will never stop until one of them is in their grave. Only one can gain the Thornthwaite inheritance. The sombre, isolated environment that they were raised in only helped to grow their mistrust of each other. They were raised knowing that a potential death lurked around every corner.
ALLEGRO
But now it’s their sixteenth birthday
Soon things are going to change

OVID: Well, yes, I suppose so, but I don’t trust him, let alone this Adam person whom we know nothing about!
LORELLI: You don’t trust anyone. I think it’d be nice to have a change around here for once.
OVID
Generally speaking I don’t like change
You and I must come to come sort of arrangement
He can come visit, but there is no way they can stay
LORELLI
My dear Ovid, why can’t you see?
The only way to have this treaty
Is if they come to stay
That is that, what do you say?
OVID: Fine.
LORELLI
I feel a change in the air
I think it’s time for a change
HAZEL: Nurse Griddle! Tom! Mrs Bagshaw!
TOM: What is it Hazel?
NURSE GRIDDLE: Calm down.
MRS BAGSHAW: What’s the matter with you, girl?
HAZEL
I can’t believe it! It’s happening!
A strange man, I think a lawyer I’ve just seen him
MRS BAGSHAW
It is no matter
You shouldn’t get so worked up
HAZEL
But wait, I am not done
Didn’t you hear?
He’s bringing his son!
A normal person
A real-life boy will soon come
I feel a change in the air
MRS BAGSHAW, TOM and NURSE GRIDDLE
I feel it, I feel it
HAZEL
I think it’s time for a change
SERVANTS, ENSEMBLE
I feel it, I feel it, I feel it
It’s coming soon
HAZEL, SERVANTS, ENSEMBLE
I feel it, I feel it, I feel it
Change is here
MYCROFT: Martha!
MARTHA: Mycroft!
MYCROFT: Did you hear?
MARTHA: It’s really happening Mycroft! They really are going to change the will!
MARTHA
They might stop fighting
Do you know what this means?
They could live in peace
MYCROFT
There’ll be no more danger
No more schemes
There’s hope at least
What is this feeling?
MARTHA and MYCROFT
I think it’s change
ALLEGRO and SILAS
I don’t like change
This isn’t a good sign
Things should stay the same and all will be fine
OVID
Generally speaking I don’t like change
I’d prefer just to make another arrangement
Oh my dear sister, why can’t you leave things as they are?
HAZEL
Just look, why can’t you see?
LORELLI
My dear Ovid, now it begins
HAZEL and LORELLI
We’ll soon invite our brand new guests in
ALL
Unprecedented, I can’t wait to see what’s next
OVID, ALLEGRO, SILAS
Oh why can’t things stay the way that they have always been?
HAZEL and LORELLI
We’ll soon invite our brand new guests in
ALL
What is this feeling?
OVID, LORELLI, HAZEL
I think it’s change
ALL
I feel it, I feel it, I feel it
LORELLI
I feel a change in the air
ALL
I feel it, I feel it
I think it’s time for a change
|
||||
4. |
||||
RUTH
Can you feel it?
It’s happening, it starts now
Perhaps it’s time that we break our vow
When they see me they’ll wish it weren’t true
I think it’s time for a change, don’t you?

NURSE GRIDDLE
One night at the pub a man met his friend
That night at the pub he would meet his end
That night at the pub the alcohol flowed strong
That night at the pub when everything went wrong
NURSE GRIDDLE & CHORUS
One night at the pub
They drank several beers
That night at the pub
They drank with their peers
That night at the pub
The day had been long
That night at the pub
When everything went wrong
THE FRIEND
My dear friend I’ve had several drinks and I think that I can
Swim across Avernus Lake and faster than you can
THE SWIMMER
My dear friend I’m drunk, but I can still stand
I know that I will win because I’m the better man
NURSE GRIDDLE
The landlord blew the whistle and the race was off at once
Each of the men swam hard and strong trying for his chance
CHORUS
Come look, come watch!
Come look and see them swim!
Look there he goes!
I think he’s going to win!
NURSE GRIDDLE
Then after they had celebrated for just half an hour
THE FRIEND
I say where is my dear friend? He should be here by now
NURSE GRIDDLE
The cops were called, they searched the lake
NURSE GRIDDLE and DI SKINNER
But there was nothing to be found
DI SKINNER
This night at the pub has ended in distress
This night at the pub we did our best
This night at the pub you should move along
This night at the pub
NURSE GRIDDLE and DI SKINNER
Where everything went wrong

OVID
You’re here, I’m here
We’re safe inside our family home here
Why go outside?
The world out there is so unknown I’d rather hide
And I don’t know how to be a son
And I’ve already lost you, before my life had begun
My whole world seems to be coming undone
Cause you’re like a stranger that I never knew
LORELLI
High gates, long halls
There’s a portrait of two parents too good to be true
And I know that you loved me, but do I love you?
Cause you’re like a stranger that I never knew
Just a child
OVID
Lost and alone with no one to
LORELLI, OVID
Help me find
What you mean to me
I don’t know what I’m doing here without you
Please help me to know what I should do
Wanting to say goodbye to a memory that I never had
Still you’re a stranger that I never knew
LORELLI
Dark rooms, blank walls
Sitting hoping you’ll talk back but it’s too good to be true
OVID
I’ve tried in vain
How much do you expect from me?
Advice isn’t free
But couldn’t you just take the time to help me see?
Why can’t I see?
LORELLI, OVID
I don’t know what I’m doing here without you
Please help me to know what I should do
Hoping to say goodbye to a memory that I never had
LORELLI
You don’t get to make judgements on a world to which you’re blind
Can you be satisfied if you are confined?
OVID
Life could be great, if you ever get a chance to throw away what those before you left behind
LORELLI
I feel like I just want to run away
OVID
This is my home it’s where I want to stay
OVID
Every day I wish, I wish I had known you more
LORELLI
I never got to know you more
LORELLI, OVID
I don’t know what I’m doing here without you
Please help me to know what I should do
Never will say goodbye to a memory that I never had
Still you’re a stranger that I never knew

RUTH: So, let me get this straight… you want me to help you, you who have never done anything for me, to send my husband away so that your little Thornthwaite runts can continue run about playing lords of the manor like the spoilt little brats they are?
ALLEGRO: Well… what do you say..?
RUTH: What do I say?
RUTH
Would you listen to a word I say?
ALLEGRO: Perhaps
RUTH
Well, isn’t this a nice little game to play?
I’m gonna take you all for a ride
Right here on the other side
CHORUS
Woah to the other side
RUTH
You are all in luck, I’ve an idea
ALL GHOSTS: You do?
RUTH
You need a plan, I’ve got one right here for you
But what I’ve got to say it don’t come cheap
So what’s in it for me?
SILAS: We can’t give you anything…
RUTH: My point exactly.
ALLEGRO: You can go back home with your husband and son, you’ll never have to see us or hear from us again.
RUTH: I can go wherever I please. Just because you lot are so attached to your precious manor and never leave doesn’t mean I can’t.
ALLEGRO: Well… then you’ve got nothing to lose. Just tell us your plan.
RUTH: Fine. But only because I know you’ll hate it.
RUTH
Come a little closer
You won’t believe what I have to propose
RUTH: We do nothing.
ALL GHOSTS: Nothing?
RUTH: Nothing. My son Adam is planning to take the Inheritance and have it all to himself. I’m so proud of him.
ALLEGRO: What? Let your son – a Farthing rule over the manor? That simply won’t do!
ALLEGRO
Take your greed, and leave, don’t return
RUTH
It’s not that simple, I thought you’d learn
It’s not your game anymore
I’ve got a plan for you – here’s what’s in store
You’ve been long dead Samson’s lost his might
You’re out of the ring, you cannot fight
So go on, cry your tears, your time’s run out
Your legacy’s lost, I can shout over you
You cannot harm me
It’s started
RUTH and CHORUS
Oh, change is coming
RUTH
That is that what do you say?
I’ve got a plan for you
I’ve got a plan
|

MR FARTHING: Adam, money isn’t everything.
RUTH and ADAM: Of course it is you old fool!
MR FARTHING: You’re too much like your mother.
RUTH: He certainly is.
ADAM: Thank you.
RUTH: See, we don’t take things lying down
ADAM: Just because you won’t fight for more doesn’t mean I can’t.
ADAM
My mother taught me how to live my life
My mother told me when she was still alive
That every day I should always strive for the best
And every night when she sang me to sleep
There were no happy bedtimes counting sheep – no!
Instead she taught me how to keep them in a pen
They aren’t as strong as man
So don’t become one of them
‘Cause some people are like sheep too
You’ve got to
ADAM and CHORUS
Fight!
ADAM
You’ve got to stand up strong
Don’t really matter what’s
ADAM and CHORUS
Right or wrong
You’ve got to fight!
ADAM
Don’t just play along
You’ve gotta lead the song
RUTH
You’ve got to
RUTH and CHORUS
Fight
ADAM
You are a sheep not one of us
RUTH
Too quick to back down and too quick to trust
ADAM and RUTH
If things aren’t going your way then give them a thrust
RUTH
And throw someone under a bus!
ADAM, RUTH and CHORUS
Come learn to be like me
And soon you’re gonna see
Just what it feels like to be free
ADAM and RUTH
You’ve got to
ADAM, RUTH and CHORUS
Fight!
ADAM
You’ve gotta stand up tall
RUTH
You’ve gotta take them
ADAM, RUTH and CHORUS
Beat them all!
You’ve got to fight!
ADAM and RUTH
You’ll die if you’re small
ADAM, RUTH
Do you wanna take the fall?
Mr FARTHING: Adam, I don’t really think that-
ADAM and RUTH: We are fighters. What are you? Just a stupid, weak old man.
MR FARTHING: It’s not always fighting that gets you what you want son, you have to understand, you have to listen to me.
ADAM and RUTH: Who would ever listen to you? You are useless. If you want people to listen to you, you have to stand up for yourself.
ADAM and RUTH
You’ve got to
ADAM, RUTH and CHORUS
Fight!
ADAM, RUTH
You gotta give them more
They won’t know what’s in store
ADAM , RUTH and CHORUS
So show them you’ve got to
Fight!
ADAM
Until you are sure
You got what you came for
Oh, you’ve got to
ADAM, RUTH and CHORUS
Fight!

OVID
I try, try to be enough
But that’s just it
I can’t, I’m not
Not the brother she needs
Or she deserves
Oh, if I try harder
I could love her
But does that matter?
Is that me?
What if I can’t feel more than this?
What if I stay trapped beneath this mist?
They say that ignorance is bliss
So do I really want to know?
But that’s not me
Oh that’s not me
Woah oh
I tried, tried to be her friend
Should I try again?
Why did I start this?
All this madness?
Cause she’s all I’ve got of family?
OVID
I never wanted more than this
I never wanted so many twists
Why did I make such a reckless choice
For someone I never knew?
Because that’s not me CHORUS
Do not help her, do not trust her
Do what is right: survive
You must end her, let her suffer
Kill her, she must die
MYCROFT
Dear child, listen to us
You listened once before, when you opened up this door
MARTHA
Dear child, the past must die
Choose now who to be, like them or me?
OVID
If I could take control of me
I’d stop the ghosts inside my head
I have more power ‘cause they are all dead
I never wanted more than this
Love has given my family a miss
Why does all this hurt my head so much to reach out?
I don’t know
But that’s not me
|
||||
10. |
||||
LORELLI: You’re just trying to turn me against him.
OVID: Of course I am, because he’s evil!
OVID
Don’t you see, dear Lorelli
He’s not what he seems?
You think he’s cool, from some posh school
But he’s really just plain mean
It’s an obvious façade, plain as a placard
Saying he’s just too perfect
Don’t you see, dear Lorelli
He’s not even worth it?
Choose me
OVID: Don’t you see, Lorelli, he’s just a con artist. All he wants is our money.
LORELLI: No, I don’t believe you, you’re lying – just leave me alone!
OVID: Wait, Lorelli, please!
ADAM: Oh, there you are Lorelli.
LORELLI: Oh, Adam, I-
OVID: Don’t talk to him! You have to believe me!
ADAM: Ovid, I don’t think that’s really an appropriate way to talk to your sister. You should apologise.
LORELLI: Just ignore him, Adam-
OVID: This is none of your business, stay out of this! You don’t belong here!
ADAM
Don’t you see, dear Lorelli
He’s just what he seems?
He’s your evil twin brother, has there been another
Who’s ever been just so mean?
He just thinks of himself you should think of yourself
You know he’s less than perfect
Don’t you see dear Lorelli
He’s not even worth it
Choose me
LORELLI: He has a point Ovid. He’s certainly been nicer than you.
OVID
He’s not like one of us
Don’t try to be like him
He’s not someone you can trust
ADAM
Just cause I’m willing to fight for you
He’s insecure
Don’t you want to be free
OVID and ADAM
Then understand you must choose me
Oh, don’t you see, dear Lorelli
He’s not right for you?
He’s selfish and conceited
I don’t know how you can’t see it too
OVID
Please just don’t be a fool
ADAM
You can see he’s a tool
OVID and ADAM
You know he’s hardly perfect
Don’t you see, dear Lorelli
That he’s just not worth it
Choose-
LORELLI: Stop!

IMELDA GAUNT
Take a flower, hold it by your heart
Take a flower, never let it part
But know that a flower’s just a flower until you learn to let it go
Take a flower, place it by your mother
Take a flower, place it where your heart belongs
And remember the precious memories of your childhood
Though you still remain a child
And I promise your parents love you even though they’re not here now
|

LORELLI
There’s a story of a girl in a tower
People came, passing by, but they never saw
So she waited for a prince to come and save her
But the prince wasn’t quite what she expected
Take a flower, place it by your grave
Don’t be afraid
There’s a place for, past the mountains
There’s a place for us, beyond the shore
There’s a place for us, somewhere far away
Come find me when I return home
Come find me when I’m alone
There’s a story of a girl who loved to dance
When she danced she was free, though life was confining
So she danced even though the world was against her
In the end she would fail every time
Take a flower place it by your side
Take a flower you will be my guide from afar
There’s a place for us, past the mountains
There’s a place for us, beyond the shore
There’s a place for us, somewhere far away
Come find me when I return home
Come find me when I’m alone
Please find me I’m all alone
You left me, now I’m alone
There’s a girl in a tower

ALLEGRO: Adam Farthing is dead. This is not what I expected to happen. Nor did I expect the police to be here investigating, getting in the way. First a lawyer, then his son, now the police! Although I suppose we don’t need to worry about the son anymore. And I expect the lawyer won’t want to stay here too much longer either. Perhaps things have turned out for the better after all. All that’s left is for this detective to leave and then things can go back to the way they were. This nonsense with the truce and the alliance will surely all be at an end with the boy’s death. The will will never change and those two idiot children will be back to murdering each other in no time. This is perfect!

FREDERICK: Hello, Allegro.
MYCROFT: Frederick, please I beg of you!
ALLEGRO: Mycroft? Mycroft? Why are there two of you? Explain this right away!
MARTHA: Please, Frederick not now-
FREDERICK
You sent me away into the darkness
You were too scared to face your mistakes
It’s over, it’s over
ELIZA: Who are you?
SILAS: What’s going on?
MARTHA: Frederick, please!
FREDERICK
You, you thought that I would be harmless
But I’m a Thornthwaite, not a fake
It’s over, move over
ALLEGRO: A Thornthwaite? What do you mean?
FREDERICK: My name is Frederick Morgan. But I was born Frederick Thornthwaite. I’m Mycroft’s identical twin brother.
ALLEGRO, SILAS, ELIZA: What?
AGNES: It’s true! Oh my son! I can’t believe I get to see you again after all these years!
FREDERICK
Don’t call me son!
You can’t be serious
AGNES
You’re my son!
FREDERICK
I must be delirious!
How dare you?
Am I really hearing this?
FREDERICK: Now you call me your son? My whole life you denied my existence!
AGNES: I’m so sorry my dear boy, I had to send you away to protect you. Only one male can be born to the Thornthwaites. I was terrified to think what Silas would do to you if he found out he had two sons. I thought he would kill you!
SILAS: Why you lying old!
ELIZA: Don’t you touch her Silas!
MYCROFT: Please, Frederick, forgive her!
MARTHA: She only wanted to protect you!
AGNES
My son!
FREDERICK
Stay away from me
MYCROFT: But -
FREDERICK
That’s enough!
Don’t you two start!
MARTHA: Frederick - !
FREDERICK
Just shut up!
You’re not innocent, no
It’s over, move over, you’re over

ADAM
I’m sick and tired of running games
I’ve stopped running
Now you’ll do the same
Though you may question
Am I truly sane?
I guess all I know is
We are not the same
My mother’s suicide was a lie
She was killed by Hedley Bagshaw
I recognised him in the paper
As the man she drew
So I hired Skinner
When the piano exploded I faked my own death to get him inside
Father you’ve always been in my way
So just go away
Step aside
Now you’ll finally see that I was right
Right about that night
She was killed!
My mother loved me; she would not go
Now at last I will finally know
|
||||
16. |
||||
Maybe I wanted more than this
But with this unexpected twist
Now I don’t know just what to think
I feel like I’m on the brink
I had someone
Now I’ve two
Now, what to do?
Everything has changed
Maybe I wanted more than this
Maybe I wanted another twist
Maybe I needed another choice
Now I’ve heard my real mother’s voice
Now it’s not just me
|

ALFRED
Foolish children, you played your part
I could tell you I’m sorry, not from the heart
Foolish children, thought you both could live
Ignorance like that I just can’t forgive
Foolish children, you should have just fled
Now see where your pride has led
You thought you could write a new legacy
Whoa-oh-oh
RUTH
Why don’t we black mail them?
Pathetic people won’t see
Those fools just can’t deny
Their own flesh and blood easily
If you’re too weak to help
I’ll just do it myself
It’s time to show them what’s in store
ALFRED
Foolish children, filled with despair
She had pushed things too far and killed off the spare
Foolish children, if only you knew
How long my hatred had slowly brewed
Your parents had so much; and I had none!
